男女2人のオシャレR&Bデュオ、Groove Theoryが1995年リリースしたデビュー&セルフタイトルアルバム 、「Groove Theory」。
Amel Larrieuxの優しくて音のように流れることもあれば、たまに不整脈みたいに聞こえてjazzを感じる歌声と、Bryce Wilsonのオシャレなアレンジ力とプロデュース力が、moothでsilkyだったり、groovyだったり、jazzyでmellowだったりする調べを生みだす。
ジャケットからも感じるけれど、BryceはAmel自身の能力を引き出す影武者としてプロデュースを楽しんでたんだろう。
シングルカットされた曲は、Bryceがプロデュースした曲でもあるRhythm-N-Bassの「Tell Me (If You Want Me Too)」のトラックを使用した「Tell Me」（”I been doin my own thing”のフレーズ、Sadat Xの「The Lump Lump」を思い出す）、あまりシングルぽくないメロウな「Keep Tryin’」と、キュートで耳に残るサウンドが印象的な「Baby Luv」（Slaveの「Just a Touch of Love」をサンプルしたSummer Groove Remixはまた印象が全く違ってクール）。
今聴くと新鮮。

このアルバムが発売した頃の私には、まだ歌詞がすっと入ってくる耳をもっていなくて、だからこそAmelのような歌声は「音の一つ」として心地よく聴こえていた。
時が経って、音楽をゆっくり聴くことも多くなってきた最近は、歌詞が自然に聞こえてくるようになってきた。そして、その歌詞に心を動かされることも増えてきた。
このアルバムでハッとした歌詞だったのが、冒頭の「10 Minute High」です。
