先日2014年6月1日に、活動家のユリ・コウチヤマ (Yuri KOCHIYAMA) 氏が亡くなったらしい。
Another beautiful human being is pronounced dead – Yuri KOCHIYAMA, 2nd generation of Japanese American as well as an activist famous for helping Malcolm X has died on 1st of June, 2014.
1921年、LAで日系アメリカ人2世として生まれる。日米開戦とともに始まった排日運動の中、1世がやっと築いた財産を全て売り払わなければならない状況の中、最後の砦だった日系人収容所へ。
そこで出会ったビル・コウチヤマ氏との結婚後にNYへ移り住み、公民権運動に参加。「我が家は常に宿の必要な人々に提供する」これが夫妻のモットーだったという。

マルコムXが銃弾に倒れた時には傍にいたという彼女。公民権活動だけでなく、日系アジア系アメリカ人兵隊を援助するため自宅を開放していたり、ホームレスの救済、英会話学校などのボランティア活動も行っていて、様々な団体から賞賛されていたという。

実は、私が彼女のことを知ったのは最近のことなんだけれど、彼女の行動には奮い立たされるものがありますね。
名誉とかステイタス、お金のためでなく、偽善でなく、自分の信念で動く・・・それがいつしか誰かのためになっているってステキなこと。自分の信念を貫いていれば、必要十分な人やお金が自然に集まるものなのよ。ステイタスやお金で動いちゃう人は、自然と離れていくだろうし。

People like her, I guess, have a natural power to gather a sufficient amount of necessary things such as people and money. Besides, they will keep greedy people away eventually.
何かと日本では息苦しいことも多いけれど、自分の行動によっては、日本も捨てたもんじゃない。討論にならない批判してるヒマあったら、自分で何かすればいいじゃないか。
