先月の旅の最終目的地は、出雲大社でした。
Our final destination of the trip last months was Izumo Taisha/Shrine. Actually, the purpose of our trip this time was “to visit Izumo Taisha in November”.

いや、実は当初の旅の目的地は出雲大社だったのです。今回の旅を決めたのが10月だったので、11月の祭事の日に訪れるには既に付近（玉造温泉・松江を含む）でここぞという宿泊先を見つけることができなかったのです。
旧暦10月の11月は、出雲では「神在月」。
八百万の神々が出雲大社（正式な読みは「いずもおおやしろ」）に集まり、「神在祭」で会議「神議（かみはかり）」が行われます。結局、私達が行った日は、会議が終わって神々が「十九社」でお休みしている期間だった模様。
Why “November”?
In Izumo area, November (actually, it should be October in the lunar calendar) is called “Kami-ari-zuki (Month when Japanese Gods comes from all over Japan)” – the Gods hold a meeting to decide things of the next year. During period of the meeting, “Kami-ari-matsuri (Festival for the Gods gathering)” is taken place there. Unfortunately, we were a bit late to meet all the Gods gathering there – the meeting was already over and Gods were taking rest in one of the shrines called “Juku-sha/shrine”.
JR特急やくもと一畑電車を乗り継ぎ、玉造温泉から出雲大社へ。
残念ながら、窓の外は雨の宍道湖でした。川跡駅から乗った一畑電車の車内がかわいくって、テンションが上がった。大勢乗ってきたので写真には取れなかったけど、2人用・4人用と木製のボックス席（半個室的な）になっていて、小さな折り畳み式のテーブルも木製で、なんだか得した気分にさせてくれる！乗車時間は10分程度だけれど、楽しめました。
Took JR Express Yakumo and a local line called Ichibata Densha – from Tamatsukuri Onsen to Izumo Taisha.
Unfortunately, it was raining quite heavily – rainy Shinji-ko (lake) over the train window.
Woody train cars of Ichibata Densha was so cute – each space for two/four was separated by woody partition and had a small foldable woody table. It’s a shame that I couldn’t take any good photo for this blog and it was only about 10 minutes ride, but it made my day!
出雲大社駅から、まず神々の玄関口「稲佐の浜」に向かいたい・・・のだが、ひどい雨風。やっとのことでタクシーを捕まえて到着したけれど、強風すぎてもう何もできない。とりあえず、写真一枚だけ撮って、退散。その後、雨風に負けず「神迎の道」を歩いて、出雲そばの「荒木屋」へ。
After arriving at Izumo Taisha station, we wanted to go straight to Inasa-no-hama, the entrance for Gods… We were able to take a taxi to get there but rain was too heavy to do anything there. Only one photo, I made it somehow. Then, we walked along “Kamimukae-no-michi; Path of Gods” and stopped by “Araki-ya” to have some Izumo Soba.
「荒木屋」は江戸時代後期創業、200年以上続く出雲そばの老舗。
出雲そばといえば「割子（わりご）そば」。割子はお蕎麦が入っている漆器のこと。江戸時代、松江の城下町ではお蕎麦を重箱のような弁当箱に入れて、野外でも食べていたそう。薬味とお出汁と、お蕎麦の重箱をもって外で蕎麦を楽しむって、オツですね。
Araki-ya is a long-established Izumo Soba restaurant, which has been serving Izumo Soba for 200 years or more since late Edo period.
“Warigo soba” is a traditional style of Izumo Soba. “Warigo” is a lacquer ware to serve soba. In Edo period, people in Matsue castle town brought soba in a double or triple-decker box (like a lunchbox) to enjoy it in the open air. Sounds lovely, doesn’t it?
まずは、3段重ねの「割子三代そば」を注文。
割子そばの食べ方ですが、3段重ねのまま出てくるので、一番上の割子にだし汁と薬味を入れて食べます。終わったら、残っただし汁をすぐ下の段のお蕎麦にかけて、だし汁と薬味を足して食べていく・・・というスタイル。あまりいい写真が撮れなかったけれど、しっかりしたおそばで大変美味しかった！雨風に打たれて身体が冷えていたので、温かい天ぷらそばも追加注文。1時間程並んだけれど、店員さんもキビキビと働いていて愛想もよく、居心地のいいお店でした。
We ordered “Warigo Sandai Soba”, served in a triple-decker box with “dashi (soup)” and “yakumi (condiments/garnish; like Negi, Momiji-oroshi and Nori)”. First, put dashi and yakumi in the first box over the soba and eat. Next, put remaining dashi of the 1st box into the 2nd box, then add some new dashi and yakumi. I couldn’t take fine photos (too busy to eat), but enjoyed the soba very much. Rain and wind made our body so cold, so we ordered hot Tempura Soba, too. We waited almost an hour outside to eat but this soba and the place was worthwhile.
出雲大社へ到着した頃にはちょうど雨も上がって、ラッキー。雨の匂いと曇り空の「出雲大社」も、また風情。
稲佐の浜まで乗ったタクシーの運転手さんによると、昨日は「神在祭・縁結大祭」と「神等去出祭」の日でもあったので、すごい人混みだったって。本殿には入ることはできないけれど、周りから見えるだけでも厳かな雰囲気が伝わってくる。神楽殿の大注連縄は立派で、二拝四拍手一拝で「世界平和」をお願いしました。
Luckily, it stopped raining in the afternoon and we enjoyed magnificent Izumo Taisha/Shrine with smell of rain – full of atmosphere in the cloudy sky. The taxi driver we met in the morning said the Shrine was very crowded yesterday since the Kami-ari Festival and the Gods Departure Festival was held. We couldn’t enter the Honden, main Shrine, but we felt magnificent atmosphere through the scenery. Oshimenawa (big and thick sacred straw rope) decorated at Kagura-den is so big and splendid. We prayed for world peace with “2-bows, 4-claps and 1-bow”.
帰りは路線バスで出雲市駅へ。そしてまた「特急やくも」。10分近く遅れての発車だったけど、岡山到着は定刻に合わせてくるのはさすが。岡山からは新幹線で新大阪へ。初めて「みずほ」に乗ったけど、かなり快適！鹿児島まで新幹線で行きたい！
We took local bus to Izumo-shi station, then got in Express Yakumo again to be back to Okayama. The train departed Izumo-shi station 10 minutes late but it reached Okayama on time – this is Japan – we had enough time to get on a bullet train to Shin-Osaka. It’s my first time to ride “Mizuho”, but so comfy! We should take Mizuho to go to Kagoshima one day!
